Independence Township has a history dating back to the early 19th century when New York and New Jersey settlers migrated to tracts of land in Michigan. The first arrived in the mid-1820s and the township quickly grew. By the 20th century, Detroit residents started vacationing at the region’s many lakes to escape the summer heat. While the railway was the primary means of travel into Independence, paved roads made their appearance in the 1920s, and accessing the township got more convenient with the introduction of I-75.

The picturesque neighborhoods that you’ll find in Independence Township today are a result of I-75, developed as the region was integrated into Metropolitan Detroit. The township is part of Independence Township, which boasts a downtown that locals love to frequent for its locally-owned shops, restaurants, and calendar of events.
